BASIS TECHNOLOGY ADDS SUPPORT FOR MIDDLE EASTERN LANGUAGES TO ROSETTE LANGUAGE IDENTIFIER

—  Inktomi Selects Rosette Language Identifier to Meet Demand for Middle Eastern Language Support in the Enterprise Search Market  —

Cambridge, MA, April 30, 2002—Basis Technology (www.basistech.com), a leading provider of globalization solutions, today announced it has added support for Middle Eastern languages to its Rosette™ Language Identifier (formerly known as Euclid), part of the Rosette Globalization Platform. The company also announced that Inktomi Corp., developer of scalable network infrastructure software, has selected Rosette Language Identifier to provide encoding and language identification support for Middle Eastern languages within Inktomi® Enterprise Search, an award-winning search solution for corporate intranets, extranets and public websites.

Basis Technology’s Rosette Language Identifier enables software and service providers to develop applications that can quickly and easily determine both the language and the encoding of incoming data. Applications need this capability in order to properly categorize, search, process, and store the data. This is particularly critical in today’s global business environment, where applications that process input data, such as information retrieval, CRM, and data warehousing, must support data in languages from all over the world.

In order to meet the growing demand for applications that can identify and process Middle Eastern languages, Basis Technology has added this capability to the latest release of the Rosette Language Identifier, bringing the total number of supported languages up to 37. This list now includes transliterated Arabic and Farsi as well as Indonesian and Malay.

“We have seen increasing demand for Middle Eastern language support in both the commercial and government sectors,” said Carl Hoffman, CEO of Basis Technology Corp. “The ability to identify Middle Eastern languages is clearly becoming a requirement for commercial applications such as Web search and government applications such as email mining.”

“We’ve expanded our work with Basis Technology because of the company’s commitment to add support for the languages that are most important to our customers,” said Troy Toman, vice president and general manager, Inktomi Enterprise Search Solutions. “Inktomi is dedicated to providing a leading global search solution and continues to address the information retrieval needs of the international market with relevant search results across multiple languages, formats and locations.”

“Many legacy and Web documents, including email, lack the markup tags that would enable applications to properly identify the language and encoding in which they are written,” explained Sami Kukkonen, senior software engineer, Basis Technology Corp. “This makes it very difficult for applications to process this text. For example, in order to mine an email for keywords, phrases, or patterns, the overall system must be able to accurately identify the character encoding and language. Our Rosette Language Identifier makes this possible, even in cases where the incoming data is malformed.” Basis Technology provides a suite of text processing and language analysis products to answer the needs of anyone needing to parse, search, or categorize the world’s languages. Developers integrate Basis Technology’s products into their own technology through flexible and concise interfaces.
