Carl W. Hoffman
CEO and Chairman

Carl founded Basis Technology in 1995 to provide rapid software internationalization services to American companies entering Asian markets. Since then, the company has grown to become the leading provider of technology for software globalization and multilingual information retrieval.  During 2000, Carl concurrently held the position of VP Asia for Amazon.com, and in 2001 was honored by the Massachusetts eCommerce industry association for his leadership in launching Amazon.com Japan.   Prior to starting Basis Technology, Carl worked as an independent consultant in Boston, New York and Tokyo to international clients including Baring Securities, Carnegie Group, Intellicorp, Nichimen Corporation, Nikko Securities, Nippon Steel, NTT, and Toshiba Corporation. Carl was educated at MIT where he also spent eight years on the research staff at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science.  He is an active contributor to several non-profit organizations, including the Unicode Consortium, the Free Software Foundation, and the MIT Alumni Fund.


Benson Margulies
Chief Technology Officer

Benson drives the Basis Technology team in helping customers set and meet their multilingual technology goals. Projects he has led include: creation of a global retail platform handling inventory management, online ordering and fulfillment, and customer service; delivery of a globalized high transaction rate, deeply integrated financial management platform; and customization and delivery of an enterprise-class customer service e-mail management tool into multiple countries. Prior to Basis Technology, Benson held technical and management positions at Kendall Square Research, Symbolics, Object Design, and Honeywell Information Systems. Benson holds a degree in Computer Science from MIT.


Steven Cohen
Executive Vice President and Vice President, Product Development

Steve co-founded Basis Technology with Carl Hoffman in 1995. He is responsible for the planning and operations of Basis Technology’s linguistic product research and development. His previous roles at Basis Technology included VP of Technical Services and VP of Operations. Prior to starting Basis Technology, Steve was the engineering manager for Cognex Corporation's Tokyo office and development manager for SMT device inspection. He has consulted on software internationalization for Foxboro Corporation and started his career as an embedded systems engineer at Teradyne. Steve earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT and studied at Waseda University in Tokyo.


Bill Ray
Vice President of Sales

Bill and his team introduce current and prospective customers to the breadth of Basis Technology’s software products, custom solutions, and engineering services. Through this effort, the team is responsible for driving Basis Technology’s customer acquisition strategies and revenue production. Bill has a diverse background in marketing and new customer acquisition. As Basis Technology’s Business Development Director, he was instrumental in building the company’s U.S. Government business, which has become the company’s fastest growing customer segment. Prior to joining Basis, Bill ran marketing and strategic partnership operations for Flashpoint Technologies, and managed events and cross-selling opportunities for some of the world’s leading consumer brands as a marketing manager for the National Basketball Association. He received his B.A. from Wake Forest University and a Master’s degree from the University of Richmond.


Joel Ross
Vice President, Defense & Intelligence Services

Joel oversees opportunities for Basis Technology to fulfill the needs generated by the US Government, particularly in the Defense and Intelligence Communities. He is responsible for determining what those needs are, and the best way to bring together USG Project Managers and Basis Technology’s software and engineering teams to produce results that benefit both parties. Prior to Basis Technology, Joel served over 21 years for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where his work was recognized by the USG through numerous accolades, including the State Department Superior Honor Award, the National Intelligence Meritorious Award, and the five-time conferral of the CIA Exceptional Performance Award. He has lived and worked on four different continents. Joel is a graduate of Cornell University, and holds an advanced degree from San Francisco State University.



Daphne Kuo
Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

Daphne oversees the finance and accounting operations and provides overall financial vision for the company. Daphne has extensive experience working with senior executives to improve the bottom-line, grow revenue and achieve strategic objectives in the technology, financial services and consumer products industries. Prior to Basis Technology, Daphne held various financial management positions at Fidelity Investments, iCAST Corporation and Toshiba America Information Systems. Daphne holds a BS in Business Administration from National Taiwan University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She is a licensed CPA in the state of Massachusetts.



Amy Silverstein
Vice President, General Counsel

Amy is responsible for overseeing Basis Technology’s worldwide legal affairs and manages the Company’s legal and human resources departments. A graduate of Boston University, her 14+ year career spans the legal, academic and business worlds. Prior to joining the company in 2005, she held positions at Harvard Business School, as an associate at Goodwin Procter and as the Assistant General Counsel for a Massachusetts-based publicly traded company. She has worked with companies ranging from start-ups to the Fortune 500 and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut.



Dr. Brian Carrier
Director of Digital Forensics

Brian leads the Digital Forensics team at Basis Technology to design and develop products and custom systems. He is the author of the book "File System Forensic Analysis" and developer of several open source digital forensic analysis tools, including The Sleuth Kit and the Autopsy Forensic Browser. Brian has a Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University and worked previously for @stake as a research scientist and the technical lead for their digital forensic labs response team. Brian is on the committees of many conferences, workshops and technical working groups, including the Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) and the Digital Investigation Journal.



Dr. Scott Miller
Chief Scientist

  Scott is the developer of highly innovative algorithms for making foreign-language content accessible to monolingual English speakers, incorporating such techniques as statistical parsing; automatic grammar construction; and exploitation of large, unannotated corpora. Prior to founding Translingual Technologies, Dr. Miller spent more than ten years at BBN Technologies, most recently as Division Scientist, where he developed several statistical named-entity tagging algorithms. Miller’s SIFT algorithm was the first trainable relation-extraction technique to achieve top performance in the U.S. Government’s MUC-7 competition, demonstrating the feasibility of automatically projecting syntactic structures onto semantic relations.
